Schools Americanism Programs 2016-2017

Lisa Davis, Lt Col USAF (RET)

As always support starts from the top. I look forward to another great year working with the schools.

Constitution Day Contest. Madison was the 2013th winner the American Legion. We would collect the entries on 20 September. This would be a great contest for an Art/History teacher.

Veterans Day Contest. Theme to be determined, but entries (posters, pictures, essays and misc) most likely will be due on the 8 November.  The middle and high schools will be encouraged to continue the tradition of having an assembly on 11 November. We will try to get more involved with the primary and elementary schools for some sort of Veterans Day recognition program with American Legion participation. American Freedom Essay Contest: Respective teacher of the student(s) can send electronically or we can collect the best essays the teachers select from their classes and send forward.  The teachers must keep their selection to no more than one per class if the American legion forwards. We will have all the contact information as stipulated in the rules. We will collect essays on 12 October.

Picture Freedom. We are looking at the Black History Month art contest sponsored by Toyota for grades 9-12 with cash prizes from $100-$5,400. We most the same procedures as for the American Freedom Essay Contest. If we collect and send, our due date would be 16 February. This would be a great contest for History/ Art teachers.

Black History Month Contest. Theme to be determined but entries (posters, pictures, essays) will be due on sometime mid-February. We started this last year with the famous Red Tail Squadron of WWII.

Memorial Day Contest. Theme to be determined, but entries (posters, pictures, essays and misc) most likely will be due sometime mid-May.
